The Canebrake started with a simple idea and a passion for creativity.
From the very beginning, it was clear to those who knew him, that Jonathan had a gift. At an early age, Jonathan strived to become a great musician. He sought to skillfully hone the ability to play any instrument laid before him.
The drums, bass guitar, trumpet and piano were all part of his insatiable drive to create music. As Jonathan’s talent matured, he also developed a taste for song writing. This helped propel Jonathan into a future of being a successful entertainer. His thoughtful lyrics and soulful melodies captured an eclectic following of devoted fans.
As a solo artist, Jonathan toured and gained recognition for his entertaining shows. He found satisfaction in showcasing his love of guitar, while his likeable onstage personality won many hearts. His shows manage to always leave his audience awestruck. And usually those who were unfamiliar with his work fast became converts.
His experience working at a Nashville sound studio cultivated Jonathan’s view of music. His original sounds became tempered with more emotion and painstaking detail. His newer music also uncovered a different perspective of his life.
It was during the spring of 2012, that Jonathan proposed an idea to his sister, Angela, in hopes of achieving something different musically. The goal was to have fun and enjoy their shared love of music. Of course, Angela happily accepted and their musical endeavor began.
First was getting a name for their group. Finding a name that represented the deep part of South Texas was a must. Matagorda County has been the lifelong homestead to both Angela and Jonathan. Matagorda, meaning “fat grass”, was a likely spin off for a band name. The findings concluded that canebrake is a type of grass indigenous to the Matagorda wetlands that have since been eradicated since colonization back in the early 1800’s.
And so it was, The Canebrake was born. Their first single, “Little White Flag” was an immediate success. The song explains the trials that are often in relationships and how surrendering to a break-up shouldn’t always be an option. The vocals in the song range from the resonating tones of Jonathan’s lead to the light and often powerful quality of Angela’s accompaniment. With “Little White Flag” their musical aspirations were confirmed.
Together, Jonathan and Angela portray a genuine and well thought out expression of music. With Jonathan’s songwriting ability and excellent sound engineering, the duo is a complete package of dynamic talent.
Also, Jonathan plans on undertaking more creative opportunities with his newly founded production company, Karbon Media. Photography, video production, graphic design as well as sound engineering are all divisions of his media enterprise.
The Canebrake hopes to continue their vision of making exceptionally crafted music to share with all of their friends, old and new alike.
